The Evolutionary Mismatch
Modern World, Stone Age Body: Why Your Genes Haven't Caught Up With Your Lifestyle
Our genetics haven’t changed significantly in 40,000 years, yet our food environment has transformed completely in just the last century. This creates what scientists call an “evolutionary mismatch” – a gap between what our bodies evolved to expect, and what we’re actually experiencing. It’s like bringing a medieval knight to a modern battlefield. His armour and sword worked perfectly for his time, but they’re hilariously inadequate against drones and automatic weapons. Your body is that knight, and processed food is the drone strike it never saw coming.
Our digestive systems, hormonal responses, and metabolic pathways evolved for an environment where food was intermittent, required effort to obtain, and consisted primarily of animals and seasonal berries. Now we live in a world of constant food availability requiring zero physical effort to acquire, dominated by ultra-processed products that didn’t exist until very recently. Your body isn’t failing you – it’s responding exactly as it was programmed to, but the inputs have changed so dramatically that the outputs now seem dysfunctional.
This mismatch explains why obesity and metabolic disorders have exploded despite our obsession with dieting and exercise. Your body is still operating on ancient programming - store energy when food is abundant because famine might be coming. The problem is that in the modern world, abundance never stops, so the storage never stops. Telling your body to ignore these deep evolutionary drives through ‘willpower’ is like trying to override your breathing reflex by just deciding not to breathe. Good luck with that approach. Your conscious mind might be modern, but your biological drives are decidedly Paleolithic.
The three systems most affected by this mismatch are digestion, hormones, and metabolism. Your digestive tract evolved for meat and organs – not factory-created food products with ingredient lists longer than this essay. Your hormonal systems evolved for periods of feast and famine – not constant grazing and blood sugar spikes. Your metabolism evolved to switch between burning glucose and fat depending on availability – not to remain permanently locked in glucose-burning mode. We’re essentially running ancient software on modern hardware (or is it the other way around?), whatever - the point is it’s no wonder we keep getting error messages.
The thing is, conventional health approaches ignore this fundamental mismatch. They try to force the body to adapt to modern foods rather than providing the body with what it evolutionarily expects. It’s like trying to solve a computer problem by pounding harder on the keyboard instead of fixing the bug in the software. Counting calories, obsessing over meal timing, following elaborate exercise protocols – these might provide temporary workarounds, but they don’t address the core incompatibility between your Stone Age body and your Space Age diet.
The modern medical approach is even worse – it’s essentially slapping bandages on the consequences of this mismatch while doing nothing to address the cause. Acid reflux medication doesn’t ask why your digestive tract is producing too much acid in the first place. Diabetes medication doesn’t question why your insulin regulation has failed. Anxiety medication doesn’t investigate why your brain chemistry is disrupted. It’s like trying to solve a flooding problem by buying better mops while ignoring the broken water main in your basement.
Carnivore eating works because it realigns your diet with your genetic expectations. It provides the nutrient-dense animal foods that formed the foundation of human evolution while removing the modern foods that create biochemical chaos in your system. It’s not a trendy diet – it’s a return to the fuel your body was designed to run on. When you start eating our species’ appropriate diet, remarkable things happen. The evolutionary mismatch begins to resolve, and health often returns not because you’ve found some magical new approach, but because you’ve simply stopped fighting against four million years of human evolution.
The ultimate irony is that we call this way of eating ‘alternative’ - which is ridiculous. It’s actually been the standard human diet for almost our entire evolutionary history. The real alternative diet is the modern Western pattern of eating – the one causing the diseases that are now killing us.
We’ve managed to convince ourselves that what’s truly weird is eating the foods that built our species, while what’s normal is eating factory-created products that have existed for less than 0.1% of human history. That’s not just a mismatch – it’s a complete inversion of reality. And your body, with its ancient wisdom, is trying desperately to tell you this truth through the language of symptoms. If you’re willing to listen!

Is Albo eating too much cheese or just the wrong cheese?
Yes agree. My wife has me on a keto or something or other diet. Meat and eggs and bugger all carbs. Since my favourite foods used to be Irish Stew, Cornish Pasties and Spaghetti bolognaise plus beer it has been a wrench. Particularly in the knowledge that those gastronomical delights are gone forever. But since I have probably already eaten two lifetimes worth I can put it all in perspective.
But fortunately I love all meats and eggs done every way. Not at all hungry and weight is slowly falling away.
So yes your opinion above is comforting to be reminded that what I am now doing is the evolutionary norm.
